Integrated membrane bioreactors modelling: A review on new comprehensive modelling framework
2021
International audience; Integrated Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) models, combination of biological and physical models, have been representing powerful tools for the accomplishment of high environmental sustainability. This paper, produced by the International Water Association (IWA) Task Group on Membrane Modelling and Control, reviews the state-of-the-art, identifying gaps for future researches, and proposes a new integrated MBR modelling framework. In particular, the framework aims to guide researchers and managers in pursuing good performances of MBRs in terms of effluent quality, operating costs (such as membrane fouling, energy consumption due to aeration) and mitigation of greenhouse gas…
Plant-wide modelling in wastewater treatment: showcasing experiences using the Biological Nutrient Removal Model
2020
Abstract Plant-wide modelling can be considered an appropriate approach to represent the current complexity in water resource recovery facilities, reproducing all known phenomena in the different process units. Nonetheless, novel processes and new treatment schemes are still being developed and need to be fully incorporated in these models. This work presents a short chronological overview of some of the most relevant plant-wide models for wastewater treatment, as well as the authors' experience in plant-wide modelling using the general model BNRM (Biological Nutrient Removal Model), illustrating the key role of general models (also known as supermodels) in the field of wastewater treatment…
Numerical simulations on periprosthetic bone remodeling: a systematic review
2021
Abstract Background and objective The aim of the present study was to review the literature concerning the analysis of periprosthetic bone remodeling through finite element (FE) simulation. Methods A systematic review was conducted on 9 databases, taking into account a ten-year time period (from 2009 until 2020). The inclusion criteria were: articles published in English, publication date after 2009, full text articles, articles containing the keywords both in the abstract and in the title. The articles were classified through the following parameters: dimensionality of the simulation, modelling of the bone-prosthesis interface, output parameters, type of simulated prosthesis, bone remodeli…
Parte V - Utilizzazione agronomica ed impatto sul sistema suolo-pianta 15. Aspetti biologici
2022
In this chapter authors focused on how and why biochar, compost, sewage sludge and digestate deriving from waste biomasses affect soil biological activities.
Biological nitrogen and phosphorus removal in membrane bioreactors: model development and parameter estimation
2012
Membrane bioreactors (MBR) are being increasingly used for wastewater treatment. Mathematical modeling of MBR systems plays a key role in order to better explain their characteristics. Several MBR models have been presented in the literature focusing on different aspects: biological models, models which include soluble microbial products (SMP), physical models able to describe the membrane fouling and integrated models which couple the SMP models with the physical models. However, only a few integrated models have been developed which take into account the relationships between membrane fouling and biological processes. With respect to biological phosphorus removal in MBR systems, due to th…
Sequential Batch Membrane BioReactor treating saline wastewater
2015
A sequential batch membrane bioreactor treating high strength salinity wastewater has been investigated. The salt effects on carbon and nutrient removal, fouling behaviour as well as biomass kinetics have been analysed. Salinity was increased at step of 2 g NaCl L-1 per week. The total COD removal efficiency was high (93%) along the entire experimental campaign. However, the biological contribution on the COD removal efficiency was reduced with the increase of salinity. The lowest nitrification removal efficiency (63%) was obtained at 10 g NaCl L-1 salinity due to the lower nitrifier activity. Regarding membrane fouling, the irreversible cake deposition was the predominant fouling mechanism…
Sustainability of food industry wastes: a microbial approach
2021
Abstract Agro-food industrial by-products signify a grave environmental problem. In addition to the conventional irrigation with wastewaters, the application of solids to the soil, and the extraction of worthwhile compounds for the pharmaceutical, cosmetics, and food industries, a microbiological strategy is also possible. In this review, the most promising microbiological methods for the valorization of wine and oil by-products are shown. Recently, there has been an upsurge in the exploitation of the waste materials generated by the wine and olive oil industries. Treatments by physical and chemical processes are generally costly, and they do not often provide entire solutions. Microbiologi…
Prediction of Disease–lncRNA Associations via Machine Learning and Big Data Approaches
2021
This chapter introduces long non-coding RNAs and their role in the occurrence and progress of diseases. The discovery of novel lncRNA-disease associations may provide valuable input to the understanding of disease mechanisms at the lncRNA level, as well as to the detection of biomarkers for disease diagnosis, treatment, prognosis, and prevention. Unfortunately, due to costs and time complexity, the number of possible disease-related lncRNAs verified by traditional biological experiments is very limited. Computational approaches for the prediction of potential disease-lncRNA associations can effectively decrease the time and cost of biological experiments. We first review the main computatio…
